Configure network devices faster and easier

Introducing Nexans LANactive Zero-Touch Configuration

Build a software-defined network with LANactive GigaSwitches and LANactive Manager

Before they can be used, switches need to be configured for the specific network, or part of a network, in which they are to be used. To make this easier, Nexans has developed the LANactive Manager platform, with a graphical user interface that enables configuration with a simple click and drop. This does away with the need to work directly with a Command Line Interface. LANactive Manager also offers a number of features for larger networks, with which you can configure multiple configuration files and update configurations for groups of switches.

LANactive Manager is continuously being updated and optimised to be easier and faster to work with and accommodate the features which today’s users require, as networks become more complex, larger and mission-critical. The latest feature to be added to LANactive Manager is Zero-Touch Configuration, a controller for centralized solutions.

Zero-Touch Configuration: how does it work?

Basically, as soon as a Nexans GigaSwitch is connected to a network segment, it automatically gets in touch with its controller to receive provisioned firmware and configuration settings. In effect, you have a centralized software solution and can purchase, install and connect hardware, such as a switch or access point in the field, without preconfiguring each device, or having to change the settings locally. Traditionally, field technicians with laptops would need to configure and update individual devices on site, one by one. Now, however, thousands of devices can be configured at once from a central location. One LANactive Manager user, for example, has enabled a single person to manage and configure some 6,000 FTTO switches across a vast campus site from behind a desk.

The approach is very similar to the way in which buildings with, for example, thousands of wireless access points can be configured. The benefits are similar, too: the process is automated as much as possible and human interaction is minimized, allowing for fast configuration with minimal room for error. Changes can be made instantly across the network. This even makes it possible to temporarily change the way in which a network functions. You simply connect, authenticate and configure. Any non-authenticated switches are simply disregarded, making the solution more secure. If the Switch is pre-defined in controller database, the corresponding configuration will be provided, but if the Switch is unknown, a default-configuration can be provided, for example blocking all access ports.

An overview of the benefits

  • No more time-consuming pre-configuration of the switches.
  • Automatic Firmware upgrade if necessary.
  • Pre-defined configurations for different device groups.
  • Huge time savings during installation.
  • Easy expansion of the FTTO network.
  • Extended network security, only pre-defined switches will be configured.

There are a few requirements to consider: Zero-Touch Configuration is only available in combination with LANactive Manager and Firmware v6.0. Pre-configuration of DHCP or DNS necessary and it is important to note that GigaSwitches always initially boot with factory-default settings.

Lasting flexibility and scalability

In a traditional fibre or copper network, each network switch needs to be configured manually. This can be a lengthy process, prone to human error. Nexans LANactive Zero-Touch Configuration offers a state-of-the-art way of designing, building and operating networks with minimum effort.

The use of LANactive GigaSwitches together with the LANactive Manager configuration and management software ensures networks are flexible and scalable. The main configuration is carried out once and performed centrally. Pre-configuring LANactive GigaSwitches is not necessary, as these are automatically configured during initial installation.
